What Is a Heating Degree Day?

Heating Degree Days measure the coldness of the weather. They are computed by taking the average temperature on a given day and subtracting it from 65° degrees. Each degree the average daily temperature falls below 65° degrees represents a heating degree day. The table that follows shows calendar degree days, which are based on the actual temperatures recorded during the month. They are intended to provide a general indication of coldness compared to normal weather.
